Golf Day 2018

WBHS Old Boys' Association Annual Golf Day 2018

Friday 16 Nov, 2018 was always going to be a special day!

Way back in May last year, it was decided that we need a Golf Competition to regalvanise the old Boys, and get them back doing things they really enjoy – having fun with old mates, a bit of exercise, and a few wonderful liquid refreshments.

This Golf Day would be a first though – well, a first for quite a while – as others would be organising it. For me, at least, I was well aware that the chances of a chaotic day loomed large – for despite assurances to the contrary, things took a while to actually happen. Sponsors would be found – rest easy Al, all will be well. yes, we will have enough teams, yes, we will have prizes …. and so, of course we did.

After finally confirming the golf course (after several false starts), and

having the Lions donate the all-important mobile BBQ, the day dawned, and 15 teams arrived about start time to commence a wonderful and most enjoyable day.

Without doubt, camaraderie was the winner of the day, followed by the BBQ sausages and onions – with golfing prowess a distant 3rd. Huge thanks to many – not the least of which being Kevin Salmon who did the majority of the organisation, organised the day itself, as well as acting as MC at the after-match; and Treasurer Bill Mallett who made sure sponsors paid up, and all fees were banked as they should be and all the columns of figures reconciled. Thanks also to those wonderful

people/businesses who sponsored holes and to those who traveled considerable distance to get here (eg David Dent – all the way from Aberdeen – not a bad effort that).

Yes, of course there are things we can, and will, do better this year – so start practicing, and saving your $$ – the sausages alone are worth every cent.

I can assure you that you will be well aware of where the next Comp will be – but aim for sometime in November I reckon, probably a Friday. Until then, start putting together a team (of 3) and spread the word.

See you in November!

Al Kirk
